6 Major Steps to Overcome a Setback to your Dream!
What does it really take to overcome a major set back in your life?
Throughout our life we all have issues or events that put us in an unpredicted situation. These situations can make us or break us based on how we deal with them. I have listen and read over hundreds of books on self -Improvement and witness numerous of people that have overcame difficult issues and have witness people who just couldn’t reach their God-given ability because of an event in their life and I do mean and event. I know what you are thinking- I have seen people hit with one event after another and you wonder what have they done in their life to deserve this are maybe you said “know better for that person” well for the sake of keeping this short we will focus on the person overcoming situations not on why! See! When something happens to you its either based on your involvement or not your involvement and it still Hurts! And the way you deal with this is how successful you will be able to rebound to reach your God-given destiny.
Why some people go ahead and reach their goals and others don’t? Why did the preseason All American blow his knee out and was unable to play his senior year and get a multi-million dollar contract? Why did my boyfriend dump me after he said he loved me? Why did she get that promotion it was my idea? WHY WHY WHY WHY???
Well I am not here to tell you why I am here to tell you after WHY!
1. TAKE RESPONSIBLITY:
Having the opportunity to be a assistant principal in a high school, you get to handle all the discipline that the teacher or the principal does not want to handle and majority of your day is listening to the excuses of teenagers on why they did what they did and majority of the time the reason somebody did something to get sent to the office it was because what somebody else did to them. See this is being defensive you will never be successful if you are always in a defensive mode of operation. I am not saying you don’t live your life on both sides of the coin offense and defense but you take responsibility for your actions and you except consequences for your move.
Successful people always take responsibility for their life “if its going to be its up to me” Successful people believe they are not puppets being controlled by some outer force or some authority figure that is trying hold them back, they believe they have a say in their destination No matter what it is. its not out there its in here (heart)
2. FIND A SUPPORT GROUP:
Find people that share similar issues but be careful wtih this suggestion you could find your self in a pity party and you surely don’t want that. A support group can be a great way to see that you are not the only one that has had a major setback in your life. Surrounding yourself with like minded people is always a great ideal but understand you need to move on as soon as possible, the longer you reflect on negative situations in your life the longer you stay in the negative state of mind. By associating with people that have had similar issues you will see that you are not so unique in your setback which can help you move on to your next adventure.
3. GET AND FOCUS ON YOUR NEXT GOAL(S):
One of the most effective things that has helped me overcome setbacks is to move to the next Goal at hand Jay Z said it best “On to the next one”. You must have a grieving period because you must learn from your mistakes and reflect on what went wrong but don’t stay there very long because it will cause you to stay in a place that is not conducive to your accomplishments. MOVE ON Dammit!!!
4. BELIEVE IN YOUR SELF
Step number 3 leads me right into step 4 believe in your-self. If you do not believe in yourself and your ability you will never take action no action NO RESULTS!!I don’t care how much somebody else says you are good until you believe you are good you are not! Being a High School Principal I saw so much great potential energy from students but that potential energy was never developed into action energy becasue they never had the belief in what other people said. We can encourage people all the time but they must Believe what is being said about them so they can Act.. So believe in yourself others will follow.
5. BE AN OFFENSIVE MINDED PERSON:
Being an offensive minded person means look for opportunities in the world. Look outside your comfort zone go to a different resturant travel to a different state or country. Take control create your own affrimations and declaration say to yourself! “I’m in control of my life” I am happy and thankful that I love my life and I am sought after by men and women for opportunities!” ” I make it Happen!”
You must believe that you can accomplishe your goals and make steps in that direction, no matter how small, they all lead to your destination. We all know the story about the turteous and the hare who cares when you get there just get there. Stop allowing people to put time paramiters on your life… When you getting married? When are y’all going to get a house etc….
6. NEVER GIVE UP:
While wacthing a pro football game the commentators were talking about the success of Michael Vick after serving time in prison for dog fighting. They spoke with Vick and he said the biggest thing that he could ever tell somebody is to “never quit” I understand what Vick is saying, he could have quit but he didn’t and now is being considered for the NFL MVP. No matter what you think about his crime he is participating according to the rules and you have to respect his perserverance.
See you never know what the future brings because we only live physically in the present. We can think about the future and the past but we live in the now. So give your all right now and never quit! I can’t recall who said this but someone said “the worst things that has ever happen to me didn’t happen” See when we allow our minds to project tragic events it causes stress and unnesccary worrying. We are to look into the future but understand our influence is limited into the future and we have more influence in the NOW! I prepare for the future but I control the NOW!

Education: The Real Deal
Through out my search of effective answer for urban education I continued to come up empty. I am not saying we don’t have effective urban schools that resemble the demographics of African American and Hispanic students but they are far in between to come up with an effective cookie cutter practice that can be carry out throughout Urban America.
Having the opportunity to visit many schools in the United States and speak with consultants who travel all over the country and assist urban schools with problematic issues, no one has had the know how or knowledge base to identify effective strategies for this dilemma.
The R.E.A.L. Deal of urban education is the attempt to do that which almost seems impossible! Educating and moving masses of African Americans and Hispanics into the mainstream of American society through, R- rigorous academic work E- engaging classroom instruction A- frequent and accurate assessments L- literacy.
These are four major components that we will research and discuss in the attempt to assisst in educating our Urban African American Students. I understand that through the country you will find several schools doing a remarkable job in educating minority students and we give honor to them, but there still remains a gap between the effective schools and the ineffective schools.
This is not intended to be an indictment on minority public education but maybe it should be? As I reflect on my personal education I resemble some of the deficiencies and low performance issues that we will try to solve in schools, but I still was able to go to college and graduate from two major Universities in this country, so in explaining strategies and effective methods can not measure internal desire, perseverance and “luck” in which every school in America has a student that is subject too, no matter what is the schools state report card rating.
In the attempt to form a structure that is not a institution of bondage but a vehicle of freedom.
Before we get to the R.E.A.L. information I would like to say my journey in education was not an easy one. Majority of educators are people who are successful in education. That is why they go into education, you probably would have a problem with a math teacher teaching math who was not good in math in school it kind of goes hand to hand. I never thought about going into education because I was not a good student, I remember me and my friend looking over our high school grades and being embarrassed that we did so poorly in high school. I need to say that he is a successful businessman now. And as for me I been fairly successful in business and running poor at-risk schools in Ohio and Florida and life long learning around the country.
This brings me to why I’m writing about Urban Education. African Americans and the Achievement Gap still exists. Although the federal government has made and attempt to hold districts and schools accountable with No Child Left Behind Act. Urban Schools still struggle to educate massive of Urban Students effectively! That brings me to what is effective?
The Achievement Gap between minority students and majority students continual to perplex educators all over the country. A systemic approach to closing achievement gaps and improving learning for all students necessitates access to a combination of educational interventions in the classroom, school, and community. High levels of academic ability can be obtained for all students by applying proven pedagogical practices and adopting policies that are within our reach.
Educators generally are perplexed when trying to find ways to raise the achievement of black students. For example, when superintendents of large urban school districts were surveyed recently, they listed the issue of the achievement gaps between minority and non minority students as one of their major concerns (Huang, Reiser, Parker, Muniec, & Salvucci, 2003). Many of these educators spoke of their frustrations and said, repeatedly, that they need practical advice—research that tells them what to do in their schools and classrooms to address this challenge.
The National Study Group for the Affirmative Development of Academic Ability believes that contemporary research in the learning sciences and on the transfer of learning may provide the guidance that educators need to help reduce the achievement gaps.
That being said, is one reason that I pursued a doctorate and for the same reason I did not continue to pursue a doctorate degree. I wanted to bridge the gap of theory and practice. I had worked in the field for so long and saw how the very institution was not successful with masses of African American children especially boys. For some odd reason boys where not interested in embracing the institution of education as a foremost important vehicle for success. Education was really a side bar of social life, sports, extra curricular activities and street involvement.
I had a friend of mind who taught and coached at a well- known private high school in the local area, majority of his players and students were from upper middle class or rich families. His frustration as a coach was the lack of commitment his players had to the game of football. He would get calls from his players stating that they could not come to practice because they were going to be out of town in Europe are even the beach. This is funny because as I was at the helm of my high school my coaches had the same problems but they weren’t going to Europe are the beach. They were going to the park or watching their little sibling.
I state that because part of the problem with academic achievement among African Americans is motivation! We call it engagement. I believe it is the most important key factor. It is only mentioned second because E falls second in the acronym R.E.A.L.
High School is boring! yeah I said it- “Down right boring!” who cares about shakespeare or any other H.S. literature requirement? See elementary is fun for students its new and exciting for the student but around the time you start getting in Junior H.S. and your interest change to your social surroundings students start to lose interest and the institution of learning becomes mundane and uninteresting to the masses of students. This mindset is not isolated to minorities, the majority population has the same effect the different is we don’t see it on our measuring devices because they are fundamentally sounds so passing a standardize test isn’t as challenging to them in comparison to a minority student that has had terrible instruction throughout his major fundamental years. See I am a believer that as long as a person can stay motivate toward an issue the better chance they will succeed in their accomplishment.
Successful people come in all academic backgrounds, you ever heard the saying “A” students work for the “C” students and “B” students manage the company? I am sure glad I’ m a “C” student..

Sink, Swim or Float

Every spiritual, social and psychological institution has a guiding mission statement or philosophy. Yet there is no specific or global plan for humanity’s future, unless we choose one! I see so many people without a plan. They allow happenstance determine their destination, instead of taking control. I believe humanity should select its own destination. See we live in the global world and then we live in our own world that we have created with our choices or the lack of.
In the 1970′s I remember people talking about “utopia” it described the best for humanity to achieve the ultimate bliss for life . This ultimate philosophy of striving for the best life possible for everyone can be one global element of common sense and common purpose in otherwise a complex and fragmented world. As we go though life and experience events from growing up, parents or guardians to school environment, friends, family members the neighborhood, those experiences shape are thoughts. of things we experience we don’t control, for instance we don’t control the fact that our parents belong to a particular ethnic group, their genetic code to make you tall or short. I had no control over my birthplace. So we come to the conclusion that there are some things we can’t control but there are alot of things we do!
You take what you are giving and participate in the “Game of Life”. Either you will Sink,Swim or Float. Alot of people are choosing to do what they choose to do because they choose to do it either consciously or unconsciously.. I know what your thinking no one chooses to be poor or live paycheck to paycheck YES YOU DO! Don’t get me wrong I have chosen some very difficult situations in my life but I have also chosen to get out of them.
Let’s make a declaration, I am in charge of my life! I take responsibility for my life! “sounds good”. Now that we have taken the first step of being in charge of our life’s, let’s determine what we are in control of?
Well, I don’t know exactly who is reading this and I don’t know your situation so you will have to look at your situation and determine what you can take responsibility of and make a commitment to do so. First, take a piece of paper or a note book and write down areas in your life that you are dissatisfied with. Remember you are taken control of your life so you must write things down that you feel empowered to change the situation. I want to remind you I am not a psychologist and I don’t claim to be a professional in this area. I am just sharing information with you that has helped my life and hopefully it will help you.
The whole purpose of this exercise is to take steps in living a life that you are in control of. The analogy of Sink, Swim or Float is a metaphor for experiences in your life, Sink represents a life that is over bearing with disappointments, chronic setbacks and unfulfilled accomplishments where you feel defeated. Float represents a lassie fair attitude about life “whatever will be will be” you settled for anything that comes your way good or bad. You wanted a new car but you get a used car that barely runs. you wanted to move to a neighborhood with a good school but you move to a neighborhood where the school couldn’t hold dog lessons! Swim represents having control of your life although the currents of life may take you some where else, you have the will to move in the direction you seek. You are in control and although the current make take you off your course you swim in the direction you believe is for you! Using the example of a (Floater), well I couldn’t move in the neighborhood I wanted to so my children have to go to a poor school but I continue to be involved with the school, I start a business to get some extra money or work a little extra so I can move later or send them to a private school. See you are in control you have taken a situation and became in control.
